Peninsula families are paying more at checkout while supermarket giants make record profits.
With Coles and Woolworths controlling over 70% of the market, our local farmers are being squeezed.
Small grocers struggle to compete. And consumers pay the price.
I've felt check-out anxiety myself - putting less in my trolley, but still seeing more on my receipt.
But it goes beyond consumers - with local producers forced to sign unfair contract terms, and sell below cost just to maintain shelf space.
This isn’t market competition – it's market failure.
Standing up to the supermarkets
We need to act immediately to tackle price gouging. I will:
- Champion a full Royal Commission into supermarket power.
- Push for stronger ACCC oversight with real penalties for price gouging and misleading practices.
- Advocate for a mandatory Grocery Code of Conduct that protects local suppliers.
-
I'll also support investment in alternatives like farmers markets and food cooperatives that connect Peninsula producers directly with consumers.
Unlike politicians dependent on corporate donations - including hundreds of thousands of dollars from Woolworths and Coles - I'll answer only to you.
As your independent, I’ll stand up to powerful interests and fight for a food system that treats our farmers and families fairly.
